Project 3. Working with Landowners

Landowners are a key piece in the jigsaw that is trying to protect Wiltshire Wading birds. As a group landowners have the most influence in terms of making on the ground changes that can benefit waders.

Raising Awareness

Wiltshire Wader Group works with landowners to raise awareness of the issues surrounding breeding waders on farmland and the vital part landowners can play in protecting them.

In general landowners are aware of the problems and if not are interested and keen to learn more. Many are keen to help waders on their land with support and guidance from Wiltshire Wader Group and other organisations. If you are a landowners your input would be highly valued, please get in touch with us using the link below:

Management for Waders

There are a variety of simple changes to management regimes that can have huge beneficial effects on breeding waders. These range form leaving fallow areas as 'Lapwing Plots' to detecting nests of Curlew and leaving a buffer of uncut grass around them. Landowners can get financial aid for management under option GS11 of the Countryside Stewardship Scheme. More information can be found from the link below:

There are a wealth of resources available on how to manage farmland to benefit waders as well as species specific management needs. These can all be downloaded below:
