Project 1. Population Monitoring

The monitoring wading birds when breeding is vital to understating and protecting their populations. Wiltshire Wader Group actively encourages people to get involved with surveys. The methods used are based on the standard methods for surveying breeding waders. Before undertaking any surveys get in contact with us to ensure that any key areas that need surveying are being covered, any training required can be provided.

The methodology for the surveys can be found here:

Non-Breeding Wader Surveys

In winter the roving flocks that some species form can be difficult to regularly survey on farmland. Additionally, many of the wetland areas used by larger aggregations of waders are regularly surveyed at part of the Wetland Bird Survey (WeBS) counts. If you would like to get involved with these counts or know a site that may qualify to be surveyed CLICK HERE.

Outside of the breeding seasons casual records of wader flocks form a vital part of the monitoring of the species. Any of the target species seen should be recorded. This can be done by filling in the downloadable recording spreadsheet below. These should periodically be sent to Wiltshire Wader Group using wiltswaders@gmail.com.

The recording spreadsheet can be found here:

Alternatively data can be submitted online using Living Record.

Please Note: All data will be passed on to the Wiltshire & Swindon Biological Records Centre to be included as part of their database. If you wish to remain anonymous as a recorder please let us know.
